Frustrated with your AutoCAD?

It may be a problem with your system variables. There were many times I would get a call from frustrated AutoCAD customers. Usually the issue dealt with one or more system variables that had inadvertently changed from their default setting. The hard part for both of us was to try to figure out which variable needed to be fixed and what setting it was originally on.

I am please to see that in the latest versions of AutoCAD, there is a command called SysvarMonitor!

In the dialog box we find some of the common system variables that have been known to cause frustration if or when they gets changed. You may also add more variables to the list, by clicking on the "Edit List" button on the upper right. If one of these monitored system variables changes and the two check boxes are selected above, then you will receive notification when it happens. You will see an Icon appear in the system tray and balloon notification. This is what it looks like.

Simply double-click on the icon to bring up the monitor dialog box. You will see which variables have changed and what their default settings should be. Then choose reset all to fix all changed variables! Viola! No more frustrated AutoCAD user.

One-on-One .....vs Classroom Training

Each has their advantages and disadvantages. The advantage to one-on-one training is that you get the full attention from the instructor. The instructor is able to customize the training to your individual needs and benefits. Often the training can be done on your own computer using on-line tools, which saves you from having to leave the office to go sit in a classroom somewhere. The one on one training can often be completed in half the time as traditional classroom training, getting you back to work and using the tool effectively.

The disadvantage is that you don't get the interaction of other students sharing information and ideas. But it is not always effective, and does not necessarily outweigh the potential benefits that one-on-one training provides.

Some of the advantages of Classroom training are that you have the collective students around you to learn from. You may also have some extra time to practice what your learning, while other students are catching up. The training tends to move at a slower pace and accommodate all skill levels to ensure all in the class can benefit. This can also be a disadvantage if you find that you are a quick learner and would like to move along faster through the training.

As you can see either way there are good reasons to choose both online, or in person, one-on-one or classroom training. Unfortunately  some choose no training at all or are self taught, which has issues of it's own. But will write about that another time.

Software Updates

With the release of the new Autocad and Inventor 2018 versions, it is a good time to update your system. I usually recommend updating the video driver first. This usually is the first item that causes problems when new software is installed. Most can update right from the manufacturers site. Also, This is the opportune time to clean out your TEMP directory as well. Some like to uninstall the old version of software and make room for the new programs. This will free up more space on the drive and and keep the system from becoming cluttered with old unused software. These are just some of the things I would suggest to end users.
